MY VIEWS AND DEALINGS OF BEING DEFFERENT

Your behaviour of dealing with being different from those around you, in your career and in your work place, is a situation one is never exempted. In this perspective, you may be the only male where the other colleagues are female or you may be in a situation where you are older than your colleagues. But how do you deal or cope with such challenges of being different among your colleagues? From my personal finding and views:
1. YOU MUST INVEST IN BUILDING EFFECTIVE RELATIONSHIP–
It simply means your colleagues will find out how smart, hardworking or fun, you are, if there is an interaction with you and your colleague. 
2. DEVELOP AN ATTITUDE THAT CREATES OPPORTUNITIES FOR AN INTERACTION
No matter how brief and seek to know some area of interest that exists among you and your colleague. And attitude becomes the Blue-print of a new experience that often develop into a pattern of behaviour  which is recognized among them therefore leading to interaction.
3. YOU MUST CHOOSE YOUR MENTOR-
i.e. an   individual that may give you an insight of an existing culture, as to help you feel you belong. This may show how powerful and knowledgeable your mentor may matter to you. The same is true, that you may have to learn from someone more experience, knowledgeable and powerful than you are.
4. YOU MUST KNOW YOUR RIGHT-

As you acknowledge that harassment based characteristic such as gender, age, race and disabilities, and that any discrimination based on these characteristics are illegal and unacceptable. Therefore, any time you are faced with this type of harassment or discrimination, you must know that anyone responsible for such attitude is liable for sanctions.

          I had such people. Some people were trying to be like mine. But i was different from them. My character and how i do my things where quite different. At last they have to stop copying me.

  4. I really enjoyed reading this post. It is giving a great insight on how to deal with situations in practical life.
    It can be concluded from this post that your attitude, awareness, believing in yourself and perception towards life defines you. And, team work and establishing an effective relationship defines your lifestyle. Together all these things helps you to deal with the real life situations.

      • I do not have a mentor… 🙂 .. a mentor simply teaches their ideology, their way of viewing life… that is fine if one doesn’t venture away from that circle of life… it does not prepare one should one venture out into the universe… I prefer to use my own open mind, with knowledge gathered over the years, combined with a open heart and free spirit to explore life, the world and the universe… not with a closed mind…. 🙂

          When I first saw the reply i was thinking it was a normal reply. I have to read to the end. I found out is quite different. I knew it was going to be a good and inspirational reply.

          Am the type who reads very inspiring comment on a post like this. since it’s talking about being different, I have to read your own view about it.

          For me am the type who engaged in such also. When I read to the middle part i was convince that the way you answered yours was different. I didn’t waste my time in reading it instead I read it like a 5years old.

          You write and explanation are quite OK. You just touch my spirit this afternoon.

      • Ideology is our belief and principles while character is the way we act, react and carry ourselves. As humans we are unique and dynamic. This means even if we have the same ideology we will still be different in the we act or carry ourselves in the course of such ideology. To me this is what makes us special and the world interesting to live in.

      • Being different is literally the best thing that can happen to a persons life, like you get to stand out from the rest. I support diversity in everything. Different ideas are actually positive .
        I think a person should embrace being different .

  17. You’ve made good points, Patrick. I especially appreciate Strategy #2: “DEVELOP AN ATTITUDE THAT CREATES OPPORTUNITIES FOR AN INTERACTION.” I’m reminded of a coworker who joined our team, and with friendliness and helpfulness began to build relationships with everyone. She did NOT make suggestions, share about how they did things at her last job, or try to start anything new–for a year. Once we knew her well, knew she had our best interests at heart, and knew we could trust her, then she very tactfully started to share her ideas. SMART! P.S.     Just completed your post, Views of Being Different. I believe this post is very informative. I would add one point, a leaders primary role is to serve and within every team the members assume the role of leader. This is an opportunity to introduce and acknowledge differences as strengths. These strengths broaden the character traits of the team. The differences become part of the teams norms.
